Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I put off reading this for quite a while because of the ghosts. I’m a Crusie fan (though I prefer her older categories most of all) but ghosts? Really?
Then I saw it on Audible.com and grabbed it on a whim. I’m not as picky about the audiobooks that keep me company while I clean as I am about the ones I sit and devote precious reading time to.
I’m glad that whim hit me because I enjoyed this book so much. As strange as it sounds, I’m not sure I would have enjoyed “reading” the book as much I loved listening to it. The narrator was wonderful (Angela Dawe, who also did Nora’s Bride Quartet, the 4th of which I also listened to on audio). The character of Alice, especially, was brought to life in the reading. She could easily have been unlikeable, depending on the inflection and tone you gave to her, and Ms Dawe’s portrayal of her was perfect. The voices were individual and not over-acted.
Maybe This Time was funny and emotional and romantic and heartwarming and sometimes a little deliciously shivery with the ghosts. I’d recommend it and, if you like audiobooks, I highly recommend the audio version.
