What I'm listening to

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ll listen to music while I’m cleaning the house or whatnot that grounds me in the book I’m working on. The playlists for the Devlin Group books usually have songs like Headstrong by Trapt and the original and new theme songs from The Unit. Action-y type songs. But right now I’m working on the emotional underpinnings of the book and trying to avoid that dreaded editorial comment: I would have liked to actually see the falling in love part, you dumbass.

Sometimes I’m lucky enough to find a song that really captures the emotion of a character. Starts With Goodbye from Carrie Underwood was eerily perfect for Charlotte in On the Edge. Right now, I have a whopping four songs on my DG3 playlist to get me through this phase of the book:

I Will by Jimmy Wayne: This is Gallagher’s song. On the surface it’s a little mellow, but it suits him.

I’ll give up my life for you,
if you want it.
Ill give you my heart,
you already own it.
I’ll do anything,
I’ll go any where.
It´s true,
I will,
I will,
I will.

I’d Come for You by Nickelback: This is totally Carmen’s song. The first time I heard it, I actually stopped what I was doing and listened to it again. And again and again.

I can’t believe I said I’d lay our love on the ground
But it doesn’t matter cause I made it up
Forgive me now
(…)
By now you know that
I’d come for you
No one but you, yes I’d come for you
But only if you told me to
And I’d fight for you
I’d lie, it’s true
Give my life for you
You know I’d always come for you

Against All Odds by the amazing Phil Collins: This is Jack and Claire’s song. It makes me cry but, no, I can’t tell you why.

Take a good look at me now
‘Cause l’ll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
That’s the chance I’ve got to take

And…

Lie by David Cook: This is like a wicked huge turning point in the book, so I can’t say much, other than Gallagher’s telling her once he gets her out of there he’ll be okay, but they both know he won’t be. The scene began its life very action-based and I’ve been tweaking the emotion pretty hard. I love this song.

So lie to me and tell me that it’s gonna be alright
So lie to me and tell me that we’ll make it through the night
I don’t mind if you wait before you tear me apart
Look me in the eye,
Lie, lie, lie.

You guys listening to any awesome songs lately? What’s the new fave on your playlist?

Theme song to last book was from Offspring’s latest: “If we don’t make it alive, it’s a hell of a good day to die…” Whee!

For the current novella I’m working on:

Never Gonna Be Alone – Nickelback
No Air – Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown
The Only Promise That Remains – Reba McEntire and Justin Timberlake

I’m totally loving Brad Paisley right now and I admit to loving his ‘silly’ songs completely!

I’m Still a Guy is one of my favs at the moment And I’m still loving Summertime by Kidd Rock. I think it’s because it’s too cold (pls don’t throw snowballs at me, srsly, it’s cold for down south!).

Totally different topic, but what’s the family’s feelings on pork chops? I’ve got great CP rec for them, lol

@Charli— I don’t think I’ve heard that song, but those are perfect lyrics and the tall kid’s still got coin on his iTunes gift card, so I’m going to go grab it.

@Jaci— I don’t know if I’ve heard any of those. I mean, I know I’ve heard the Nickelback song because I’ve heard them all, but it must not have registered with me. Will give it a relisten. I know I haven’t heard No Air, and I had no idea Reba and Justin had a duet. That must be from the “Duets” CD? I love the duet she did with, umm….Kelly Clarkson, even though some of the lyrics hit a little close to home emotionally and it screws up my always shaky balance for a while.

@Annmarie— I totally wish we could imbed soundtracks in ebooks. Wouldn’t that be cool? That’s one “cheat” movies get we don’t—helping convey the emotion through the music. *pout*

@Rhonda— I love Brad Paisley, too, mostly because he doesn’t take things So Very Seriously. I like the So Much Cooler Online song, but that might be influenced by Jason Alexander’s performance in the video. Hilarious! And I love All Summer Long. It’s one of the rare songs my husband and I both like.

Porkchops…well, three of us like them, but I have to be really, really picky. I don’t remember the name of the cut, but there’s a very lean cut that I have to buy, and then I have to go all postal with the handtrimming of the fat. They’re not great for him, but if they’re lean enough I can go with them. And, since we don’t eat fish, I have to cheat a little here and there or we’ll die of chicken overdose. Send it my way, if you don’t mind, and maybe I can make it work.

Ohmigod! Just found Frou Frou’s version of Holding Out for a Hero on iTunes! The one from Shrek! I know it’s lame and, when compared to Bonnie Tyler, it barely counts as singing, but something about that version makes me a happy HAPPY girl!

    WHEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Okay, sorry. Back to work for me.

Shan, the song’s called Half-Truism. And from the same album, Fix You also rocks. (Album: Rise & Fall, Rage & Grace)
