Shan vs. Word Grammar Check

Just for shits and giggles, I sicced Word’s hideous grammar checking function on Becoming Miss Becky. Not because any publishing professional on the planet should use it, but just to amuse myself. And possibly you.

Shan: Lethal and lawbreaking men made a sight more sense to him than dimpled, dark-eyed women, that was for damn sure.

Word: Change women to woman

New Sentence: Lethal and lawbreaking men made a sight more sense to him than dimpled, dark-eyed woman, that was for damn sure.

More after the jump…

Shan: Rebecca almost felt like herself again as she stepped out onto the sidewalk and quietly pulled the door closed behind her.

Word: change herself to she

New Sentence: Rebecca almost felt like she again as she stepped out onto the sidewalk and quietly pulled the door closed behind her.

Shan: “We’ll rent you a room at the hotel until you find something more agreeable,” Adam said.

Word: change find to finds

New Sentence: “We’ll rent you a room at the hotel until you finds something more agreeable,” Adam said.

Shan: Seems Brent and Lucy are going to be grandparents and Lucy—”

Word: change are to is

New Sentence: Seems Brent and Lucy is going to be grandparents and Lucy—”

Shan: But what if the prediction was more dire?

Word: change more dire to direr

New Sentence: But what if the prediction was direr?

Shan: A nice enough color to make a woman feel pretty without making her look like she was for sale.

Word: change look to looks

New Sentence: A nice enough color to make a woman feel pretty without making her looks like she was for sale.

Shan: Her back arched and he groaned as she…(heeheehee)

Word: change her to she

New Sentence: She back arched and he groaned as she…

Shan: She said he’s all riled up and waving that gun around, demanding Mr. Barnes give him all the money.”

Word: change give to gives

New Sentence: She said he’s all riled up and waving that gun around, demanding Mr. Barnes gives him all the money.”

Shan: “Not as much as you’re gonna be if Eliza Jane sent you here to reason with me.”

Word: change be to is

New Sentence: “Not as much as you’re gonna is if Eliza Jane sent you here to reason with me.”

Shan: “As touching as we find being serenaded, if you want to come in all you have to do is knock.”

Word: change knock to knocking

New Sentence: “As touching as we find being serenaded, if you want to come in all you have to do is knocking.”

Back arched sounds like some sort of fancy bedroom gymnastics.

:eyebrow: I think MS translates the written word to Uooganu, then makes the corrections and re-translates into English.

This is why you can’t depend on grammar/spell check. Nevery mind the idiosyncrasies of speech/slang it misses/messes up.

    I don’t know. Let’s ask Word!

    :lmao:

Word agreed with you. Don’t know if that’s a good thing or not.

Sometimes it worries me grammatically-challenged new writers might depend on Word grammar check.

    :grouch:

Geez. Your grammar check is broken! I’ve only used mine a couple of times, but never saw anything that bad!
