“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” —George Orwell
On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia, adopted a secret resolution that formally established a military organization whose fame and tradition was destined to achieve prominence in the annals of American warfare
“First to Fight”
Marines have been in the forefront of every American war since the founding of the Corps. They have carried out over 300 landings on foreign shores. They have served everywhere, from the poles to the tropics. Their record of readiness reflects pride, responsibility and challenge
“From the Halls of Montezuma
to the Shores of Tripoli,
We fight our country’s battles
On the land as on the sea.
First to fight for right and freedom,
And to keep our honor clean,
We are proud to claim the title
of United States Marine.“Our flag’s unfurl’d to every breeze
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun.
In the snow of far-off northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes,
You will find us always on the job
The United States Marines.“Here’s health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we’ve fought for life
And never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.”
“Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don’t have that problem.”
–President Ronald Reagan, 1985
Some quotes from Chesty Puller, the only Marine to win the Navy Cross five times for heroism and gallantry in combat (in four wars):
“We’re surrounded. That simplifies our problems!”
“So they’ve got us surrounded, good! Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards won’t get away this time!”
“All right, they’re on our left, they’re on our right, they’re in front of us, they’re behind us… they can’t get away this time. “[When Surrounded By 8 Enemy Divisions During WW2]
Be safe. Sleep with a Marine.

My daddy and my son were Marines. Thanks Shan for this lovely reminder to thank those who work so hard to protect us!

Lovely, Shan! I had to laugh at the quotes – there’s an RAF pilot who famously said of the Falklands War, “I don’t see it as being outnumbered. I look on it as a target-rich environment.”
Happy Birthday Marines! :clap:
(Although, Dear God, I hope heaven doesn’t have armed guards on the streets! :shock:)
