Briefly horoscoping & writing advice
My husband took me out for breakfast this morning and, since we were there without children, we each took one of the small daily newspapers so as not to have to communicate with one another. (Just kidding…mostly.) After whizzing through the so-not-the-NYT crossword, I scanned my horoscope.
VIRGO: You may offer your advice free of charge, but the other person still pays for it with his or her attention. You have something powerful to impart, but do it in only a sentence or two. Brief is best.
Hmm…what kind of writing advice can be given in just one sentence?
If it doesn’t make you laugh or make you cry, it’s not strong enough yet.

Oooh, good ones. Um, thinking…
If you don’t think of your characters are real people, no one else will.
(We’re not playing dress up dolls here. Characters have to have a past that has shaped them, tagged on baggage and skewed their perspectives in some way. They’re opinionated, quirky and unique. They’y're far from perfect. And they all don’t look like Barbie and Ken)

Absurdity is the best remedy for writer’s block.
(Sometimes I can’t figure out how to get from Point A to Point B, and it’s easy to get bogged down. Throw in some complications like clowns and drag queens and talking raccoons, though, and more often than not, something plausible will shake loose. But maybe that’s just me.
)
