Anybody given up caffeine?

How long do the headaches last?

I’m tired of burning a hole in my stomach lining and giving Dunkin Donuts $40 a week, but…I’m skeered. :hide:

For me, the worst was over in two days. Good luck. I still miss caffeine, but I just can’t tolerate it.

I didn’t get headaches, but I fell asleep every time I sat down. I finally went back on caffeine so I could remain conscious and vertical. Good luck!

    Good luck.

Don’t do it if you have a deadline going on–I tried whilst doing exams, and it was UGLY.

Replace the DD with a mildly caffeinated tea, even an iced tea…then wean off that. Chocolate has caffeine in small bits, so you an always try that as a headache cure.

    What?

    Hey, I’d buy that excuse!

The few times I’ve tried to give up caffeine, I’ve found just a sip or two of coffee will take away the headaches.

I never drank enough caffeinated anything to go through withdrawal, but I don’t think the headaches last too long.

I do make a nice decaf iced coffee, though, by dissolving a heaping iced teaspoon of Folger’s decaf crystals and a couple packets of Splenda in a half inch of warm water at the bottom of a tall glass, adding a couple inches of 1 percent milk, four ice cubes and water to fill. If you don’t want the sweet, omit the Splenda (or sugar or whatever).

But 40 bucks a week? Dude! :eyebrow:

I gave it up for lent once and had headaches for about three weeks. I will never do it again (giving it up I mean).

You could go half and half (regular and decaf) for a couple of weeks to wean yourself. I went off carbonated beverages for the summer of 2004 with no ill-effects. I stayed off them until summer of 2006. Since them, I’ve eased back into them. I’ve considered ditching the caffeine though.

I think one of the keys is to stay hydrated. Water, herbal or decaf tea, decaf coffee should help. Pop a Tylenol or a couple of aspirin for two or three weeks when you first get up?

Good luck. Oh, and consider investing the $40 a week into a high risk mutual fund. Back in the mid-90s, instead of buying scratch off lottery tickets, I started putting $100 a month into an Aggressive Growth mutual fund. I have a whole lot more money now than if I’d played scratch-offs, and I don’t mind having it in a riskier fund — cause it was lottery money anyway.

Well, I’m not thinking like a total purging of all caffeine. I’d like to cut back so I have two cups of coffee in the morning, and then maybe one early afternoon. We’ve already switched to caffeine free Coke with dinner.

Mostly I need to cut out the 2-4 large iced coffees from DD each day. By mid afternoon they’re eating my stomach alive, plus it’s hard camping without them.

So not a total caffeine cut, but a DD cut.

((((Shannon))))) I’ve never had so much caffeine it’s given me a hard time to get off it, but it is hard work. A week or two for the headaches?

You’re doing the right thing! Keep drinking plenty of water to flush the evil drug out of your system….

    Proud of ya.
