An etiquette question…
So I’ve been weeding through my bookshelves. Weeding is too mild a word, actually—taking a turbocharged weedwhacker to them is more like it.
One thing I discovered is that I have duplicates of some of my favorite books because I later got signed copies and there is no way in hell they’re going to the dump. I’d love to have a “package” giveaway—like a print copy of Forever Again along with a half-dozen of my favorite books.
But I don’t know if it’s okay for an author to giveaway used copies of another author’s books. 
Is it an okay-share-the-love thing? Should I try to contact the authors of the books and ask first? Or just forget the whole thing?

I think it’s a great idea. (Can you tell I’m a bit of a contest junkie? LOL!) It sounds like a nice way to get books into the hands of someone who might enjoy them. You never know when a contest may result in a new reader. Case in point: I won an anthology (Dates from Hell) from Kelley Armstrong and have since purchased all of her other books.

Shan, I think it’s a great idea.
As an author, I’d have no problem with it.
Another thought — my local library benefits from my periodic shelf-culling. I don’t sell my used books, but I half think that’s due more to my inherent laziness than anything else.
But what IS it about books that we just can’t toss ‘em when we’re done? It’s like pulling up a plant that’s still alive — it seems so. . .so wrong.

actually JUST YESTERDAY I watched the librarians at my local library throwing book after book — mostly hardback — into a huge dumpster. Made my stomach hurt.

I pass along everything unsigned that I buy as I don’t have room to keep them anymore. If no one wants them, I donate them to the library.
Over this past year I’ve been sending all my reader copies to a writer hit hard by Katrina. It doesn’t replace all the books she lost, but it’s a little something.

And I’ve been trying to donate this books to everybody on the planet. Even the women’s prison didn’t want them.
