I've seen a few conversations about them recently. Certainly something to look into.

Romance Writers of America IS the place for learning about the industry. And you definitely learn about the bad along with the good. I've been a member for several years now, so I may just be jaded by thousands of discussions of word count methods, endless examples of list over-moderation, and the Great Annual Brouhahas (I think it was the Great Publisher Recognition Brouhaha when I joined, and I almost asked for my money back the first day I was admitted to the lists OMG, was that ugly! But I stayed, and learned a LOT).

Would it make a difference if I'd sold to Flipside or SIM instead of EC? Probably. Would it make a difference if I had any desire whatsoever to ever go to Nationals? Probably. But I don't. RWR and that confusing mass of email loops which mostly seem to consist nowadays of "This is not the correct loop for this discussion", are my benefits.

I'm still trying really, really hard not to make a rash decision. Really I am. But shutting down what was a fairly reasonable discussion on a private loop intended for discussion of RWA business was...OMG! Too much.

If you just joined recently, you really shouldn't make a decision based on this situation, even though this situation sucks and is WRONG (sorry), because another Great Annual Brouhaha will come along next year, and the benefits you reap may still tip the balance of your scale toward staying with the organization.

You know Shannon, like you, I was so proud to finally become a member of RWA (and I'm a complete newbie). With two books under my belt it was time to get out and learn this industry. And what better organisation than Romance Writers of America... now, to have this incident blow up, I'm feeling very disillusioned.
I thought this was a professional organisation dedicated to advocating romance writers. Instead I feel as though I've fallen into some dreadful social club full of vapid women who'd rather talk about what everyone else is doing instead of discussing what they are working on. I've paid my dues for this year, I''ve paid for Reno and flights... but I'm also shopping around for a professional writers group. Preferably one that is more interested in 'that' I write, not what I write.

The rwaorg list. They've actually allowed like 8 posts through since they went to moderated status. I'm not impressed. :eyebrow:

Essentially she said why are we even worried about the trash?

And it does have a moderator. She's the one who censored my post.

Is there a moderator on this list Shannon? Perhaps they need to be reminded what respectful discourse is.
