Trip to the bookstore

Inspired by Alison’s comments during the wordsmithing discussion, I bought a copy of Rodale’s The Synonym Finder today.

Being only 19 years removed from junior high, I looked immediately for the dirty words. Imagine my disappointment. It does have orgasm, though: climax, culmination, peak, acme, zenith, high, or crowning point, supreme moment, consummation, fruition.

The few times I’ve wanted a thesaurus, I’ve made do with the sucky one built into Word, but I figured it’s time to have a grown-up version now.

I’m not grown up yet. I still have 2 weeks to go. Guess that means I’ll need a thesaurus too *sigh*

I also use the word one….maybe I’ll go look for a dirty word dictionary too! *g* Just teasing! ;-)

I have a Roget at home. But the person who had my office at work before me left behind a big Macquarie (Australian) Thesaurus - and I confess I wonder every now and then if anyone would notice if it came home with me! Just to borrow, of course ;-)

And re your comment on my blog - I can perfectly understand salivating over yarn! I knit and weave, and love yarn so much that I spin it, too - wool, silk, alpaca, cashmere, angora. I salivate over yarn catalogues and yarn shop web pages, and if I had more $$ to spare, the yarn shop 30 miles away (our nearest) would have me as a constant visitor ;-)

*smug look* I have the Chambers Thesaurus and Concise Dictionary.

It’s odd, though - the more I write, the less I use them.

I’d love to be able to spin! My knitting projects are always limited by saving my pennies for the good stuff. Unless a little one has a wool allergy, I hate knitting with acrylics.

And, even with the Word thesaurus at hand, I rarely used it. When in the flow, I find that the first word I put down is usually the right one, but it will come in handy for those times when I’ve got a repetitive word or a character with a substantially different vocab.

I think I’ve seen a dirty word thesaurus online somewhere. I’ll have to see if I can find it.

Did you know the thesaurus on Word is censored? Microsoft has removed the “dirty words”, as if they don’t exist. I’m on my second Rodale’s - this one a hardcover copy!!

  7. Suzanne Says:

I *love* Rodale’s!!!!!! It’s the greatest synonym book in the world. Man, you’d think I was getting a cut. LOL.

I have boycotted my Word thesaurus, it sucks. And my meaning of sucks, btw, is NOT in there.
